When I first started looking for a job in Australia, I didn’t expect it to be so difficult. During the pandemic, finding a job became even more urgent as I needed a stable income. Over two years, I applied for more than 120 jobs and even lowered my expectations to internships just to gain experience. Despite this, I only got about five interviews, none of which led to a job offer.

Adding to my frustration, my resume was confusing and unfocused, blending my engineering background with unrelated business degrees and certifications. I had a strong academic foundation, including several research projects for universities, but I suspected my academic experience wasn’t translating well to private companies. Rejections citing “cultural fit” confirmed this fear.

Interviews were another struggle. I felt extremely nervous and unprepared, especially when questions delved deeper than surface-level topics. I could only anticipate basic questions but had no idea how to handle tougher, job-specific ones. This lack of confidence left me feeling stuck and unsure how to move forward.

When Australia began reopening this year and the economy started recovering, I resumed my job search with renewed energy. Armed with Thea’s strategies, I applied for a role at a consulting firm specializing in environmental and sustainability solutions for the built environment. This role perfectly aligned with my background, and I was thrilled when I received an interview invitation.
