Landing a job in interior design in Australia wasn’t an easy journey for me. I’d applied for about 50 jobs in interior design and property styling companies but received no responses. I knew my resume and cover letter weren’t strong enough to catch anyone’s attention. My resume didn’t highlight my experience effectively, and my cover letter wasn’t compelling. On top of that, despite having one year of freelance property styling experience in Australia, I struggled because I lacked substantial local experience.

To make things even more challenging, I was on a temporary visa, and I knew that opportunities would be limited while I was still on a student visa. Feeling stuck and unsure how to move forward, I reached out to Thea, hoping her coaching program could turn things around—and it did.

Thea helped me revamp my application entirely. She transformed my resume, cover letter, and even worked with me to create a portfolio, something I didn’t have before. As a designer, I realized that showcasing my skills visually was critical, and the portfolio became a game-changer in my job search. I’ve since kept it updated regularly because I know how powerful it is.

Another breakthrough was learning how to focus my applications on the most suitable companies rather than applying to a broad range. Thea taught me how to tailor my application for each company and helped me narrow down my search to roles that matched my expertise and aspirations.

After applying with my updated application materials, I landed an interview with a furniture company. The interview felt like a conversation, not an interrogation, thanks to Thea’s advice to “go with the flow.” They told me they’d get back in a week, but in the meantime, I also interviewed with a curtain company. I passed that interview and got the job offer.

To my surprise, they offered me the highest end of the salary range I’d asked for. It was a dream come true, especially since they also provided comprehensive training to help me grow. Shortly after, the furniture company also came back with an offer. Now, I’m working two jobs, gaining invaluable experience and building a solid foundation for my career.

However, my ultimate goal is to work as a full-time interior designer. So, I continued applying and landed another interview for a design role. I’m currently waiting for the next steps, confident in my abilities and my growing portfolio.

Through Thea’s coaching, I not only gained the skills and strategies I needed to secure jobs but also found someone who supported me emotionally during a tough time. Being in Australia without family, Thea was like a friend, always cheering me on and helping me stay motivated during the pandemic.

Thanks to the jobs I now have, I’m eligible to apply for PR. I’ve already lodged my skills assessment and am ticking all the requirements. I’m optimistic that my PR dream will come true soon, opening the door to even more opportunities in my field.
